5 Tips for Your First Tag
Tagging is the foundation of all graffiti. It's your signature, your brand, and your most basic form of expression. Before you move on to throw-ups and pieces, you need to master your handstyle.
1. Keep It Simple
Don't try to add arrows, halos, and stars right away. Focus on clean, legible letters. A simple, well-executed tag looks infinitely better than a messy, over-complicated one.
2. Flow is Key
Graffiti is about movement. Your letters should flow into one another naturally. Practice writing your name in one continuous motion without lifting the pen.
3. Balance and Weight
Make sure your letters have consistent weight and spacing. Don't crowd them too much, but don't space them too far apart either.
4. Practice, Practice, Practice
Carry a sketchbook everywhere. Fill pages with your tag. Experiment with different markers and surfaces (legally, of course!).
5. Find Your Style
Study other writers, but don't copy them. Take inspiration from fonts, calligraphy, and even comic books. Eventually, you'll develop a style that is uniquely yours.
